My dinosaur and I found lots of great places for pictures - so I may need to do a series* - starting with the image below. I will post it when it is done.
We use our head, our hands, and our heart to create works of ART! |
First I took my dinosaur out for a walk...now it is time to take a line for a walk. The famous artist, Paul Klee said, "Drawing is like taking a line for a walk." I like that idea and it seems to match the feeling I have whenever I put my pencil down on the drawing paper. One idea just leads to the next until what you see is what you want to say. I will post it when it is done. *series - when an artist works with one idea or theme for several art works.

Well this looks like fun...maybe I will take my dinosaur for a walk tomorrow. I am posting a link to a fun magazine article about a photographer who takes pictures of his toy dinosaurs visiting places all round the world. This photograph looks like an ancient prehistoric scene. Very cool - right?
After encouraging everyone to try drawing their toys - I decided to try it myself. Meet Mr. T Rex - our talking dinosaur. I challenged my self to draw faster this time and by speeding up the playback to double time, the video runs just over 3 minutes. I colored it afterwards to also save a little of your viewing time.
So why not set up a stuffed animal or two and draw them like Still Life Objects. Many professional artists train themselves to create and then draw Still Life arrangements to practice their skills. Don't forget to post a comment or send me an email to let me know what kind of art you are making this summer. It is fun - especially on these rainy days - when maybe you can't go outside to play. Email your thoughts to: [email protected] We had fun at the library today - books, puzzles, games, legos . . . and friends!
If you could not make it today - I hope you join us next time on July 11th from 9-NOON. While I waited for some friends to show up I tried drawing this Lego Dinosaur. Your toys make great Still Life objects - try it yourself. Another long video - just under 15 minutes - but still that is pretty long for a video!!!
I have allowed myself to narrate the first portion of the video. So let me know if that works for you. You can always turn off my voice if it sounds distracting. That is something you can't do in the classroom - lol - right? I'm having fun drawing these animal images that I found on a deck of cards that I got to play with my grandsons. They are just small enough to fit on the screen when I am video-taping but big enough to see the details of what I want to draw. I hope to see some of you at the library tomorrow over at EJ. We will have game boards set up and lots of books to checkout. We may even try a drawing game....hmmmm....... I will have my Jenga blocks setup and I am willing to take on all challengers! I went to the Water Park yesterday with my family, so when I found this picture of a frog, I thought - why not - let's draw him. So here is Fred the Frog! i used a #2 pencil again and then a permanent marker - but this time I decided to use colored pencils too. My drawing time on the original video ran 30 minutes long so I selected 2X for the speed for playback and got the video with a little additional editing to just under 15 minutes. But still that is a long video and you may want to speed it up even more to preview it. I do not want anyone thinking that I draw as quickly as the video shows because drawings like this, with color, does take time and patience to create. I put the simple theme music in the background again but you can always turn the volume off if you don't want to listen to it repeat over and over again. What would you like to see me draw? Send your ideas to me through the comments or you can send me an email with your parent or guardian's help. [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you! Keep on drawing my friends! Picture A Picture B Thursday night I sketched a "selfie" I took last week - Picture A. When I looked at it on Friday morning - something seemed "off" - so I had to spend sometime looking at it and figuring out what went wrong. Can you see what I changed in Picture B? It reminds me of the song..."One of these things is not like the other ..." Artists have to practice resilience* and keep coming back to adjust their drawing to make their drawing match what they see or what they are thinking. So keep on drawing, my friends...and remember... Practice and Resilience are important tools for your art kit! *resilience - Sticking with something until you get it right or at least better! CATNAP M.U. 6/2017If you could travel anywhere... where would you go? Some place far away or some place close to home? With your imagination you can go anywhere... STEP 1. Find a How-to-Draw book at your library.STEP 2. Find a page that interests you and try it!STEP 3. You can add your own ideas too!Just keep drawing...because practice...makes better! The first day of summer...are you ready to go? I am. I just got my car back from the repair shop...so off I went on a round of errands. One of the places I was sure to stop was the Carol Stream Public library. I love libraries! They are full of fantastic resources for artists like us and I couldn't wait to check out all their how-to-draw books. In fact I found five different books that I was interested in today. One of the books is Drawing Vehicles - A step-by-step Sketchbook by Mari Bolte and illustrated by Lucy Makuc. You can watch the video I linked below, to see what I drew.
And check-out all the fun activities on my Hiawatha Camp Bingo Card from the library! Who knew that I would be going to camp this summer? You should never get too old to have a good time. Why not check out your local library too and don't forget next Tuesday, our own Elsie Johnson library will be open. I hope to see you there. I consider myself very lucky to make a living by making art. As an art teacher, I enjoy the additional benefit of working with artists everyday - Student Artists! Today I was inspired by some art work produced by S.Z. during a project this past spring. We were learning about Eric Carle, the author and artist, of some of our favorite books. We painted some "pretty papers" and then cut out simple shapes which we then put together to make our own characters.
I looked at the simple circles and ovals that S.Z. used and decided to try drawing it myself today. I hope you enjoy the video - this time I added some music to the background! It is fun to work with iMovie. Do you think you can draw Gerry the Giraffe? I think you can! Thanks S.Z. for the inspiration! |
